Every website lives on a server somewhere, and the company that runs that server is your host. Most business owners never think about hosting until something goes wrong: the site is slow, it’s been hacked, or it’s down and nobody is answering the support line.
Here’s what managed WordPress hosting is, how it differs from typical cheap hosting, and how to tell whether your business needs it.
Shared hosting vs. managed hosting
Typical shared hosting
Shared hosting is the low-cost option most people start with. Your website shares a server with many other sites. You get the server space, but almost everything else is up to you: installing updates, setting up security, making backups and fixing problems.
When something breaks, you open a support ticket and explain your website to someone who has never seen it.
Managed WordPress hosting
Managed hosting means someone takes care of your website’s technical side for you. The server is set up specifically for WordPress, and the routine work of keeping a website healthy is handled.
What managed hosting should include
Not every “managed” plan includes the same things. Here’s what to look for:
- Speed. Hosting tuned for WordPress, with caching configured for your site so pages load quickly.
- Security. An SSL certificate, firewall rules and WordPress security hardening.
- Backups. Automatic daily backups stored off-server, with a fast way to restore them.
- Updates. WordPress core, theme and plugin updates applied and checked, not just switched on automatically and hoped for the best.
- Monitoring. Uptime monitoring around the clock, so problems are caught quickly.
- Real support. A person who knows your website and can actually fix things.
Why updates matter more than you think
WordPress powers a huge share of the web, which makes it a common target for hackers. Most problems come from outdated plugins and themes. Keeping everything updated is one of the most important things you can do for security.
But updates can also break things. A plugin update might conflict with your theme, or change how a page looks. That’s why updates should be applied and checked by someone, not just left to run on their own.
Do you need managed hosting?
You probably do if:
- Your website brings in leads, bookings or sales.
- You don’t have time to manage updates, backups and security yourself.
- You’ve had problems with a slow or hacked site before.
- You want one person to call when something isn’t right.
Basic shared hosting may be enough if your site is a simple placeholder and you’re comfortable maintaining WordPress yourself.
Hosting from the person who built your site
At Dream Web Digital, I host the websites I build myself. I set up the server, tune caching, install SSL and security, keep daily off-server backups, apply and check every update, and monitor your site around the clock. When you need help, you call or text me directly and get an answer the same day.
Hosting with me is never required. I’m happy to launch on your existing host, too. Learn more on my hosting page, or get in touch with any questions.
